Marqués de Riscal Releases Frank Gehry Reserve Selection

A decade ago, the venerable Rioja winery Marqués de Riscal opened its City of Wine in the village of Elciego, the centerpiece of which is the visually stunning Hotel Marqués de Riscal, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. To commemorate the 10th birthday of this landmark structure, Riscal is launching a limited-edition wine named after Gehry.

Made entirely from old-vines Tempranillo, this is the second Gehry Reserve Selection the winery has made; a 2001 bottling was released in 2006 in conjunction with the opening of the hotel. Only 5,000 bottles of the 2012 will be released.

“Frank Gehry is a visionary who has graced our winery with a building that beautifully captures the essence of Marqués de Riscal and its rich history,” said Alejandro Aznar, president of Marqués de Riscal, Rioja’s oldest winery. “With great pleasure, we raise a glass to a man we are honored to call our friend, as we toast him with his own special vintage.”

In response, Gehry equated winemaking to creating art. “The more you see of the process, the more you understand there’s a real artistry to winemaking. Getting to know the artists at Marqués de Riscal and spending time in their beautiful vineyards has been a great pleasure,” said the 87-year-old, Canadian-born architect.
