Barolo Producer Roberto Conterno Buys Gattinara Estate Nervi

Barolo producer Roberto Conterno of the iconic Giacomo Conterno winery acquired 90% of Nervi, an estate in Gattinara, located in Alto Piemonte.

Erling Astrup, a Norwegian entrepreneur who bought the then-ailing Nervi estate in 2011, broke the news today in an interview with Norway’s business online publication, DN. He told the publication that he and his wife, Kathrine will retain 10% of the company, but declined to comment on how much Conterno paid.

He added Conterno, whose Barolo Riserva Monfortino is considered a must for serious collectors, will be enlisting his son, Gabriele, in the Gattinara venture, while Enrico Fileppo, Nervi’s winemaker since 1983, will stay on.

Founded by Luigi Nervi in 1906, Nervi is the oldest winery in the Gattinara denomination, and has more than 69 acres planted with Nebbiolo, the same grape behind Barolo.

While Barolo demand is at an all-time high, Gattinara, further north in an area known collectively as Alto Piemonte, is also undergoing a winemaking Renaissance.

Conterno’s investment in the area confirms the potential of producing elegant, ageworthy Nebbiolo in Gattinara and Alto Piemonte.
