An experimental wine made by Alvaro Castro, this is 60% Touriga Nacional and 40% Alfrocheiro, a popular red varietal in the Dão region. Don't be too shocked by the gamy, barnyard nose. It blows off after a few moments to reveal coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and black-cherry flavors. It is close to being ready to drink, but may be difficult to find due to limited production.

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
