More than 50,000 people are evacuating Napa and Sonoma counties today as the Glass Fire blazes across Northern California wine country, AP reports. The latest in a series of devastating fires to strike the western United States, the Glass Fire hits Napa and Sonoma one month after area firefighters battled the LNU Lightning Complex fires.
There are 143 Napa wineries in evacuation zones. Sterling Vineyards, Chateau Boswell, Newton Vineyard and Fairwinds Estate Winery are among the wineries affected by the blaze.
The Glass Fire grew from a 20-acre fire to burn more than 11,000 acres in Napa and Sonoma, and was 0% contained as of 9:29 a.m. PT. Driven by dry, hot and windy conditions, it has spawned two smaller offshoots, the Shady and Boysen fires.
“That fire last night was moving at about 40 mph because of the wind, down the hill into the city of Santa Rosa,” Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents Healdsburg, told KTVU-TV. “We just don’t have words. It’s an incredibly trying and emotional time right now.”
The Glass Fire is one of 27 major fire clusters currently burning in California. In 2020, more than 8,100 wildfires have burned 3.7 million acres in the state. Since mid-August, more than 7,000 structures have been destroyed and 26 people have died.
