These glasses are lighter and not as sturdy as the real Sommelier glass. The stems are thinner, as is the base and the connection of the stem to the bowl and stem to the base is thinner. The glass itself is much lighter than the regular Sommelier which causes a problem with the weight of the wine in the glass. These value set glasses are considerably more fragile due to the light weight. I have already had one break during hand dishwashing. Simply put, these are a "cheap" version of the real Sommelier. Am surprised Reidel would make them.
When. I bought the value set I compared them with the non-value glasses I already had they are different. The non-value glasses are heavier with a thicker stem and heavier base. Likely the gauge of the glass looks thicker as well. I think for the price difference they are a good value. However, I think the risk of breakage sooner is higher with value set. For the non wine enthusiasts it would not matter however for me... It does.
They are $115 each, but are very special glasses. Very impressive when you can pour a whole 750 into a single glass. Kind of a fun, novel thing to do. A warning though. They are very fragile. Great care should be taken when washing and drying.
The old saying....if the deal looks too good to be true.... While the glasses are the same shape and quality crystal, the thickness is half what it is with the individually sold glasses. Affraid to wash them for fear of snapping the stems in half. Nice try but you should mention the differences.
While there is nothing "wrong" with these glasses, they are very thin and delicate. We have the "normal" sommelier Bordeaux Grand Cru and broke one. I ordered this so that we would have a spare. Not thrilled. Every time I wash them I am afraid they will break. They just are not the same. I should have spent the same amount of money and gotten one that wasn't a "value set."
These are not the same as the original Sommeliers glasses. They are lighter because they are lead-free crystal. If you want a beautiful piece of stemware that is lead-free, get the value set. If you want a beautiful piece of stemware that weighs more, contains 24% lead, and costs twice as much, get the original Sommeliers glasses.
These are fantastic glasses. I have had a variety of different styles of Riddle Sommelier glasses, a collection of Riedel decanters and other more casual Riedel glasses for many years. I love them. However, like other fine crystal pieces, the Sommeliers do require careful use and handling. If thats not your thing, dont buy them.
The Riedel Sommeliers will, however, provide the greatest enjoyment of whatever wine you choose to drink.
There is no better stemware on the marketplace when you're tasting high-end Bordeaux blends, Cabernet or Shiraz. In term of the experience, these stems are an amplifier. A great gift for somebody who enjoys the finer things in life.
Riedel stemware has been part of my life for over 35 years. Initially thinking stemware is stemware, Riedel brings a subtle elegance to any dining experience. This stemware is well-balanced and allows for the accumulation of the aromas, which further enhances the enjoyment of the wine.
These glasses are beautiful and functional, but they do feel fragile in a way that my other glasses don't. Whether they are worth the price, I don't know. But at 2 for 1, the price proposition is better, and they are easily the best glass I've used
