Santa Barbara Wine Region
(San · tuh Baar · br · uh)
About 100 miles north of Los Angeles and situated in California’s Central Coast, Santa Barbara County is home to 350 wineries and seven officially recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), each with distinct topography and soils that allow a broad range of grape growing and wine styles. The most diverse is also the widest—Santa Ynez Valley AVA, which contains four sub-AVAs and a range of microclimates. At 69 miles long and 45 miles wide, you can get from one end of Santa Barbara County to the other in about one hour. The county also includes the Channel Islands, which are 22 miles offshore.
