Blood Orange Soda Cocktail, the Molto Facile

Courtesy Tim Cooper, beverage consultant, Bar Gonzo, New York City

Make the most of citrus season with this Italian-accented cocktail, presented in a casual way: an open-topped soda can and straw. Created for Los Angeles restaurant Gusto, this features Aranciata Rossa blood orange soda from Italy, along with either fresh-squeezed blood orange juice or frozen concentrate. Mezcal (or, in a pinch, Tequila) adds peppery piquancy.

2 ounces Sanpellegrino Aranciata Rossa
2 ounces mezcal
½ ounce lemon juice
½ ounce simple syrup
1 ounce fresh-squeezed blood orange juice, purée or concentrate
Blood orange wheel (for garnish)

Remove top of can with can opener. Reserve soda, and set empty can aside. In cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine mezcal, lemon juice, simple syrup and blood orange juice or concentrate. Shake well, and strain into can. Add soda and crushed ice. Garnish with blood orange wheel. Serve with straw.
