The Alabama Slammer, a Chaotic Recipe That Somehow Makes Sense

What’s in a name? Well, that might depend on who you ask. What we do know is that not too many states have a cocktail named after them. Meet the Alabama Slammer.

Here’s everything you need to know about this cocktail, plus how to make it right.

What Is An Alabama Slammer?

It’s a cocktail made from amaretto, sloe gin and Southern Comfort. The drink may sound a little chaotic on paper. But its flavor-profile is actually quite refreshing.

Where Did The Alabama Slammer Come From?

Technically, the drink was created in the 70s, but it became popular in the 80s after the 1988 film Cocktail. Also known as a Southern Slammer, it was created at the University of Alabama, home of the Crimson Tide, aka the school’s football program. Cocktail legend says that the bright red and orange color of the drink was a great way to pay homage to the team while tailgating or at game day parties.

FAQs

What’s In an Alabama Slammer?

An Alabama Slammer has four ingredients. To start there’s Southern Comfort (or SoCo) a spicy, whiskey-based liqueur with fruit flavors. Then there’s sloe gin, which is made from tart berries typically found in England. Amaretto is a nutty flavored liqueur best known as the main ingredient in an Amaretto sour. Lastly, you’ll need orange juice.

To get that bright, beautiful color, it’s best to shake all ingredients in a shaker, instead of building it in a glass.

How Do You Make an Alabama Slammer Shot?

An Alabama Slammer shot has all the same ingredients as the cocktail. Simply cut the amount of Southern Comfort, sloe gin and amaretto liqueur in half. Add as much or as little orange juice as you would like.
