- A Wine and Sports Memorabilia Collector’s Dream Cellar
As you will see from the Cellar Video Tour, wine is not the only thing this customer collects! His stellar collection of Napa Cabs, Bordeaux and Italian beauties is rivaled by his outrageous sports memorabilia collection. This traditional wine cellar is crafted in Grand Mahogany wood with a Dark Walnut stain and offers a beautiful combination of display, aesthetics and capacity. Utilizing a ducted Wine Guardian cooling system, every bottle in his prized position is being properly protected and stored so each wine can age to its ultimate peak.
We asked the customer to share some comments about the design and construction of this unique, custom wine cellar…
“I have been fortunate to have built two wine cellars during my wine collecting days, both of which I relied and employed the services of Wine Enthusiast. My previous house had limited space. I built the wine room twenty five years ago, holding approximately 1,000 bottles, using Wine Enthusiast redwood racks and a split cooling system.
The opportunity to work with Gary on this cellar was exciting from the get-go. He was already a collector of wine and sports memorabilia and wanted to incorporate it all in a really FUN way! And what’s more fun than building an entire level of your home dedicated to your passions in life.
Over the years I became a more serious wine collector, visited Napa Valley and Italy several times and joined a few California wine clubs. We recently moved and decided to build our current house knowing that we wanted a bigger wine cellar. I contacted Wine Enthusiast and discussed our ideas and vision with Lou Ann Hesch from Wine Enthusiast. After our initial conversation I knew Lou Ann was the perfect person to design our wine cellar dreams. Although this process was time consuming, the years of future enjoyment and excitement far outweigh the initial time and effort. We spent several months designing the racking system, lighting and the required wine room cooling demands. Our goal was to design a 1500 bottle wine cellar.
Like any masterpiece, which this cellar certainly is, it took several revisions on the original design concept to get to this final result. This is why designing and building a custom cellar is truly a work of art.
We purchased a Wine Guardian one piece ducted system with David’s assistance at Wine Enthusiast which was installed by our local contractor. Working with Lou Ann was so well coordinated that our anxiety was reduced and our stress was nonexistent. For a racking system we purchased mahogany wood with a dark walnut stain ……. and designed the room with single slots, pullout case shelves, double deep diamonds, magnums and corner display racks. The design took several meetings, but the finished wine room is gorgeous. The compliments we have received are never ending.
With a collection like Gary had, we had to make sure everything was being properly protected. And with the wide open storage space he had adjacent to the cellar, the Wine Guardian Ducted Unit was the ideal solution.
We also utilized the Wine Enthusiast installer. I cannot say enough about this person’s work ethic and how meticulous and neat he was during the racking install. The installation took approximately two weeks and the end results are breathtaking.
For those serious wine collectors looking to build and design their wine cellar, I can only offer the following suggestions. Be patient, listen to your Wine Enthusiast designer’s ideas and TRUST their expertise. We are looking forward to many years of enjoying our wine cellar. This would not be possible without having Lou Ann and the Wine Enthusiast staff design and guide us through this process."
Designing wine cellars like this is truly my passion. It is such a treat to work with true wine lovers like Gary who share our passion for wine, beauty and collecting, and these collaborations lead to simply stunning cellars like the one you see here.
