Over the past two years, the Chloe Wine Collection—developed by acclaimed winemaker Georgetta Dane—has spearheaded efforts to celebrate female directors. At the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, it showcased “Projection,” a short film about the impact of female filmmakers. This year, the company is teaming up with Women in Film and actress/producer Kate Bosworth for the She Directed contest.
“Winemakers and filmmakers alike are passionate craftspeople working in industries that are challenged by gender disparity,” says Dane. Teaming up with Women in Film, an organization that supports the careers of women in film, TV and digital media, helps Chloe Wine Collection further their mission to support the careers of women in two of California’s main industries.
The She Directed contest, which began accepting submissions on February 20, 2019, is open to short films or feature film excerpts with a female protagonist and made by female filmmakers. In addition to adding her star power, Bosworth will be among the final jury.
Wine Enthusiast sat down with Bosworth to discuss She Directed and her love of wine.
How did you get involved with Chloe Wines and its Women in Film program?
As an actress and a producer, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to advocate for the careers of women in film. When I learned Chloe Wine Collection and Women In Film were teaming up for this program I was really excited to get involved and help encourage women behind the camera to take part. She Directed brings together so many of my favorite things—cinema, strong women, and great wine.
Now that you’ve spent a little time around the wine world, do you see parallels between women’s role in it and in film? What can professionals in the two industries learn from each other?
I definitely see parallels between the two industries. Filmmakers and winemakers are both creators that have a ton of passion for their craft. As with many industries right now, women are speaking up more and more about their experiences in growing their careers and advocating for other women in a major way.
In film and wine, there are amazing, talented women that are breaking ground for others who are just starting out. I think it’s really important to have female role models and mentors, no matter the industry.
Have you always been a wine lover? What drew you in?
The first incredible bottle I ever tasted was a 1980 Margaux. That moment was when I realized the power of a truly magnificent bottle of wine. It still stays with me as a powerful memory. That’s what I love most about sharing a great bottle, the friendships [that] enjoy it, the stories told and the laughter (and sometimes tears) shared.
What’s your ideal dinner and bottle on a night in?
There is a particular sausage ragù that takes many hours to make, that I’ve become a known for within my family. It’s now our Christmas Eve tradition. The depth of flavor is incredible. There’s nothing yummier than a bowl of pasta smothered in this ragù with a great bottle of red wine.
And is there a specific wine, cocktail or other beverage you pick up to celebrate when a movie wraps?
A whiskey with my husband!
