Bubbly and Well-Priced? Try Burgundy’s Crémant de Bourgogne

Some of the world’s most expensive and famous Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays hail from Burgundy, but less known is the region’s stellar sparkling side.

Crémant de Bourgogne, Burgundy’s sparkling wine, uses flagship Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, but also other grapes Aligoté, Gamay, Melon de Bourgogne and Pinot Blanc to create fresh, sparkling white and rosé wines made in the traditional method. Try one of these eight examples next time you reach for a sparkler.

Bailly-Lapierre 2017 Egarade (Crémant de Bourgogne); $27, 91 points. Apple flesh, rye bread and lemon peel make appearances on this wine’s subtle nose. They also feature on the palate, accentuated by the fine, gentle foam. This wine is harmonious, fresh and vivid, with a long finish. Wine Warehouse Imports. —Anne Krebiehl MW

Paul Chollet NV Blanc de Blancs Brut (Crémant de Bourgogne); $29, 91 points. Vivid notes of ripe yellow apple fill this wine’s nose, along with a savory hint of yeastiness. The palate has freshness, yeasty, almost salty autolysis and rounded fruit freshness. Fruit, yeast and freshness unite on the dry finish. —A.K.

Parigot & Richard NV La Sentinelle Extra Brut (Crémant de Bourgogne); $28, 91 points. This wine’s shy nose reveals only lemony hints of chalk. Touches of Mirabelle appear on the palate alongside more notions of chalk and lemon, presented against a textured backdrop on a taut body. The finish is dry, subtle and enticing. Bruno Dangin NV Cuvée Blanche (Crémant de Bourgogne); $25, 90 points. The freshness and ripeness of green and yellow apple flesh strikes with purity on this wine’s nose. The palate offers the same expressive fruit, bedded on smooth, gentle foam and a fine, yeasty creaminess that makes this wine exceptionally easy to drink. It’s refreshing, apple-scented and bright. Louis Bouillot NV Grande Réserve Perle des Vignes (Crémant de Bourgogne); $20, 90 points. A subtle hint of vanilla clings to notes of warm brioche on this wine’s rounded nose. The palate sweeps up this roundness in a generous embrace with concentration and freshness. Bubbles froth with liveliness, countering the autolytic roundness. The appetizing finish is dry. Vignerons de Mancey NV Brut Réserve (Crémant de Bourgogne); $22, 90 points. Ripe red and yellow apple create a fruity nose on this wine. Albert Bichot NV Brut Réserve (Crémant de Bourgogne); $18, 89 points. In this wine, an initial whiff of reduction blows off to reveal bright notes of Golden Delicious apple.
