This dedication has enabled the creation of a porfolio of balanced, complex and elegant wines that express their terroir — be it the Colchagua Valley’s highly sought-after Apalta region, the cool coastal areas of the Casablanca and Leyda Valleys by the Pacific Ocean, the saline soils of the Atacama Desert or the traditions of the Maipo Valley.
First Steps
It all began in Chile’s best terroirs with the Trinidad vineyard in the Maipo Valley and the Roblería vineyard in Apalta. Even the biggest sceptics were surprised by Ventisquero’s debut vintages from these regions, considering that they came from such young plantations. The high grape quality led to the first limited production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Carménère wines.
The name ‘Grey’ was chosen for these wines to break with tradition because creating wines from single blocks dared to show the passion and boldness of the Ventisquero team. The wines were compared to the purest glaciers of Patagonia. That is how Ventisquero Grey was born.
Ventiquero Grey was the driving force behind Ventisquero moving into the production of ultra-premium wines that paved the way and defined the route towards elegance, balance and maturity.
Bathed by the Chilean Coastline
Ventisquero’s coastal Tapihue vineyard in the Casablanca Valley, just 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean gave birth to Ventisquero Grey Chardonnay. Bathed by the Humboldt current, one of the coldest on earth, the cool morning fogs combined with the vineyard’s sandy-clay soils provide the ideal place for Chardonnay to develop.
There is a strong maritime influence at Ventisquero’s Las Terrazas vineyard in the Leyda Valley too, as it is situated just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard adjoins the mouth of the river Maipo, close to where it meets the sea. This location creates an excellent environment for fresh, mineral wines which, because of the soils, have a high level of acidity. This is the home of Ventisquero Grey Pinot Noir.
The jewel among the reds
Ventisquero’s La Robleria vineyard, in Apalta is the birthplace of Grey’s red varieties, such as Merlot, Syrah and the only red wine blend in the Ventisquero Grey line – a Mediterranean-style blend of Garnacha, Cariñena and Mataro called Ventisquero Grey GCM. A short distance from the River Tinguiririca, the Roblería vineyard has the perfect mesoclimate for producing fine wines. Its stony-sandy and red clay soils are ideal for growing Syrah, Merlot, Garnacha, Cariñena and Mataro in single blocks.
Wine in the desert
Ventisquero Grey has helped expand Chile’s wine-making maps by going one step beyond and moving the boundaries of viticulture. This year, Ventisquero Grey launched its Sauvignon Blanc from its Nicolasa Vineyard in the world’s driest desert – the Atacama. This wine faithfully reflects northern Chile and its flavors express its mineral origin, marine influence and calcareous soils.
Ventisquero is showing the world the diversity of Chile’s soils. It has therefore carefully selected the best terroirs for Ventisquero Grey, to offer a good range of varieties. Each bottle has its own particular character and forms part of a range of wines that are harmonious and elegant and offer flexibility, making them a perfect choice for special moments.
