Lux Adds Sicily’s Tornatore to Their Portfolio

Among E. & J. Gallo Winery’s many holdings is the high-end importing unit LUX Wines that’s focused on acquiring Italian, terroir-driven brands for its portfolio. LUX announced last week it was the U.S. importer for Sicily’s Tornatore wines.

Tornatore is located in northeastern Sicily, the Mediterranean’s largest island and there’s ample sunshine and warmth. Together, the cooling sea breezes and high-elevation preserve acidity, enhance the structure and bring complexity to Tornatore wines. The volcanic soils are both fertile and well drained making the region ideal for viticulture.

The family-owned winery is in the town of Castiglione di Sicilia on the northeastern slopes of Mt. Etna, Europe’s biggest and most active volcano. While the family is relatively new to winemaking, they have been growing grapes for more than 150 years.

“My first commercial vintage was 2012,” said Founder Francesco Tornatore. “However, it was my great-grandfather who was the first in our family to plant vines here in 1865.”

Having grown up among the vines on Mt. Etna, Francesco had access to the best lots for planting. All the lots today are located within just a few kilometers of his childhood home and the winery.

Tornatore joins Allegrini, Argiano, Jermann, Pieropan and Renato Ratti brands, making LUX, which was started in 2014, a portfolio of six Italian properties.

Four of Tornatore’s wines—Etna Bianco, Etna Rosso, Etna Rosso Pietrarizzo  and Etna Rosso Trimarchisa—are expected to be in stores in January. The SRPs for the wines range from $30–$80.
