Who Gets to Participate in the Cannabis Market (and Who Doesn’t)

As the legal cannabis category continues to soar, the culinary and beverage industry has taken note. From cannabis-infused ‘wines’ to cannabis pairing dinners, the cannabis market size was valued at nearly 18 billion dollars in 2021. By 2028, the U.S. market is expected to reach 40 billion dollars.

While the category has some exciting things on the horizon, it’s important to understand the complicated history of cannabis in America.

In this week’s episode, assistant editor, Jacy Topps talks with leading cannabis advocate, Wanda James, about representation, funding and the evolving cannabis landscape. A political consultant and former finance committee member of former president Obama, James was the first Black woman in the U.S. to become legally licensed to operate a dispensary. Along with her husband, James owns Simply Pure, a Denver-based cannabis dispensary.
