Because these thermoelectric coolers have a bad reputation of failing within 2 years. Can't buy parts to repair. I am purchasing this one to replace a failed frigidare loves unit that is 2 yrs old. Warranty will reduce the cost of the next replacement.

Thermoelectric cooling is a relatively new technology for consumer products. A total of three years of warranty is the minimum life I would expect, and the warranty provides that coverage.
